DIY tips for the perfect wedding hashtag!

Wedding hashtags have been quite the rage for some time now. With #Deepveer, #Virushka and #Nikyanka flooding our social feeds for the past few years, it is expected that each new couple has to conjure up their own cool hashtag. In several ways, a wedding hashtag is a good idea. It is like a personalised slice of social media for you and your partner, I mean, who doesn’t like that? But yeah, with everyone going after wedding hashtags nowadays, it’s quite hard to come with a completely original yet a fun hashtag.

If you are stuck and can’t really come up with anything good, maybe these tips will help you.

Start with the basics, your names

Just mash both your names together and see if it fits. This is the most basic idea but it might work for some people. Just put both your names together and slap a ‘weds’ between it. Better yet, go for something cheeky like, “#JackandJillsadventure”. It is simple but it works and it doesn’t take up much time for brainstorming. The downside is that, since its so simple, it is likely that the hashtag already exists. You would have to share your slice but its an easy slice so it balances out.
Example: #SasikalaBritto
Bride Name: Sasikala
Groom Name: Britto

Trust your Pun-Instincts

If you or partner has a strong pun game, by all means, bring it into play. Punny wedding hashtag has a very nice ring to it (pun intended). They are unique with an added bonus of being rememberable. Just look for some rhymes, synonyms, alliterations etc for that extra zing. Plus, brainstorming these with your partner and friends would be really fun.
Example: #RheaKiJayHo
Bride’s Name: Rhea
Groom’s Name: Jayanth

Come up with a celebrity-like couple name

Literally, anyone can do this with their name but it has to sound good too. Being the next Deepveer or Virushka is quite the task. Can your names do it? Can it be concise yet catchy? Can it be unique without being tacky? And above all does it suit you and partner?.
Bonus tip: If your pesky friends and relatives used to call you two by something along these lines, own it and use that.
Example: #GoPrem
Bride’s Name: Premitha
Groom’s Name: Govind

Base your hashtag on your theme

If you are having a theme based wedding, it would be a good idea to base your hashtag off that theme. It would ensure solidarity and would sound really cool. The best way to utilize a theme wedding is to go all out, right?

Use an Inside Joke or Story

Take an inside joke or story and put it in the wedding hashtag in a creative way. This way the hashtag could double up as a conversation starter for the guests and it’ll be totally unique!
Example: #TheRichmondSweethearts
Bride’s Name: Sara
Groom’s Name: Jared

The bride and groom first met each other at The Richmond College and hence the hashtag.

Work your Location into your hashtag

This is perfect if you are planning for a destination wedding. You could pull double duty by adding the location to your wedding hashtag, you could flaunt your exotic destination wedding and it would also be a killer wedding hashtag.
Eg: #BandBaajaBali
Bride’s Name: Snehal
Groom’s Name: Skumar

It was a destination wedding which was organised in Bali hence the hashtag

Consult your friends and family

If you are still finding it hard to come up with a catchy hashtag, consult your family or friends. They might have a better idea of the direction you should take. They might have really good ideas which might work. So always keep your friends and family at the ready.

If all else fails, use plan B

If all else fails, there is no shame in using an online wedding hashtag generator. There are lots of these available on the internet and they are free. The hashtags might not be very creative but if you just want the simple stuff then sure, go ahead with this.

Some wedding hashtag “I dos” and “I don’ts” “I dos”
  • Make it easy to remember so that it’s easy to share.
  • Always double check your hashtag, maybe some other couple used it already.
  • Always capitalize each individual word in your hashtag, for example, #Letterfromfarizva would look much better as #LettersFromFaRizva
“I don’ts”
    • Keep your hashtag length in check, don’t go overboard with the character length.
    • Avoid spaces, special characters in your wedding hashtag.
    • And abbreviations don’t count as hashtags because it is not clear and guests will get confused.

With these tips in mind, it should be clear how you should pick your perfect wedding hashtag. Once you have formulated your perfect wedding hashtag, spread the word far and wide. Print it on your invitation, post it online, just do things that would your hashtag maximum reach. And always have fun while doing it, or else what’s the point?
